Jane, you're on the money - after this week we need distractions,

Roy be they humorous eulogies, witty speeches (altogether too rare, these days), and looking at episodes of Yes, Minister or Open All Hours.

In the past month I've seen half a dozen old friends "cross the bar" (as ex Navy folk say) so I've been looking at pick-me-ups.

As the Ricky Gervais show said, "Life's too short". And even Warwick Davis would laugh. 🤣

Having just come from a funeral Monday, the eulogy is fresh in my mind. In this case the person giving the eulogy used a train analogy (picking up and dropping off people on your journey through life) and it felt contrived and awkward. The best part of any eulogy I think is in finding some obscure detail of a life that you never knew but because it so fits the person, there is an emotional link created. But the really best part was the distribution of note cards revealing Aunt Shirley's secret dip recipe. Thank heavens she did not take it with her! I think my comment is now perilously close to being longer than your post. LOL!

My daughter’s proofread included her cricket reference that her Gran went out on Boxing Day after 102 years and 357 days! At a memorial gathering, the staff and residents at the nursing home, found this reference really funny!

Thank you! I've downloaded Deborah Tannen's book. Right now, I'm sticking to known quantities, such as books, music, blogs rather than news. It's a bit too much otherwise.

Oh, Jane, thank you. A picnic basket can't always be filled with wine, chocolates, and joy. This is just such a week. Here in California we're just gutted. It's hard to focus and understand. Thank you for little bits of context and distraction.

What fun to hear about you reading Deborah Tannen. She's one of my favorites. I found "That’s Not What I Meant," very helpful navigating my world of tech. Just looking in my very messy shelves at my desk I've realized that I can't put my finger on my dog-eared copy. I should do something about that. I also have her book about speech between mothers and daughters "You're Wearing THAT?"

I can't wait for your November "Forget-me-not" episode with Peter Billingham. Register at https://tockify.com/eventscalendar/detail/43/1732060800000?startms=1730444400000

My eulogy: It should be like a good sermon - 3 points and an illustration.

Agree Jane...its time to mute the news and creatively write a new reality that has us smiling again.

Hi Jane, I like your Hump of short writings. And your photo with “Maria”. Have you been to see Wharf Review ‘It’s the end of the world as we know it’ - it was so entertaining, my face is still sore from laughing so much. How appropriate as Australia prepares for next federal election just after USA ELECTION and recent visit from our King and Queen. Enjoy writing, Laurie

Randomness is the spice of life. (Indeterminacy/choice/free-will/determinism - a beautiful, evocative, fecund terrain to explore). A veritable 'lucky dip' today. Thank you.

Random works for me more often than not! 'Tis where the juiciest bits can be found. Cheers
