Thank you, Jane, for yet another most interesting piece.

I love that you are embracing new learning (and subsequently teaching), and I love how you relate it to Rebel Talk (which I loved, by the way).

My older life has seen me take on new activities - eg, bushwalking - I have joined a local walking group which I have really enjoyed. No strict rules, just meeting lots of lovely like-minded people. So, some learning for me through this - new places, new locations, and meeting others whom one can always learn something from.

My Camino Santiago Walk in Spain is now only a few weeks away, and ... I need to learn some Spanish to help a little when there - so, more learning!

I agree with your goals - they are similar to mine. (I am much older than you Jane.)

I think that we "get away with" not being in touch with the requirements of our bodies and minds when we are young, and then we pay the price for that ignorance as we age; as the needs of body and mind become more critical because our taken-for-granted ability to seamlessly recover from injury is taken away from us by the aging process.

I am now much more aware of my posture, the workings of muscles and of my emotional reactions (and their impact) than I was when younger. Wish I'd known it then, but I didn't seek it out. What I can do now is keep my life and interests busy by slowing down those processes that lead to life-decay.

I now dance more, get involved in voluntary work, attend almost any courses offered to me.

As a consequence of, at last paying attention - I am enjoying life like never before.

I like the way you think, Neill. You sound like you have an abundant life and are in tune with yourself. Wishing you good times and increasing muscle strength!

Pilates does offer a muscular skeletal workout that strengthens the body for active yoga, pétanque and any dynamic sports that you want to choose. While your balance, muscular strength and eyesight remain at healthy levels you are future proofing your movement tasks.

You are embarking on the art of demonstration the close relative of presentation. Sensory awareness of your body in space will give you insight into how to describe the pilates exercises. The warm up activities are essential so that you can assess how to prevent newcomers’ overstretching.

Now re-invention is always part of life long learning. My vocation or career involves being interested in everything as a generalist teacher.

This tends to keep me busy as I try to work out where to place my interest and energy.

Teachers live by timetables and this is a highly structured way to live. Disruptors of structure come in different forms and generally involve time management. Which means the skills are reapplied to adapt to different life situations.

I have tried a number of relaunches.

A primary year five /six maths tutor

A badminton coach for years ten, eleven & twelve CALD students.

And more recently as a potential art gallery volunteer.

I really like issues based research and will keep looking out for ways to continue this interest.

All the best with your pilates teaching!

Carolyn

So great you are learning . I have always had a curious mind . I still get excited most weeks about something in the garden , in the studio ; completely allowing a painting to find its own language. The complexity of learning anatomy and then on a practical level achieve milestones based on the beauty of movement! Phenomenal, creativity in the brain and body connection challenge. . I’m so excited for this next chapter and I’m sure knowing how your brilliance shined in your journey as a journalist that anyone would want you as a star instructor.

Such kindness Sarah! Thank-you for having faith in me. And I loved what you said about ‘completely allowing a painting to find it’s own language’. That’s such a rich idea to grapple with. Stay well! X

Absolutely, ‘I like your work’! I’m studying Japanese, in Taiwan en route currently, and just inspired to get some traction after drifting ‘stasis like’ during and surprisingly post - Covid nonsense … recovering Mandarin also!!! 谢谢你 …^_^
