Hello I’m Jane 👋

Welcome to Jane Hutcheon’s Show & Tell, formerly known as the Juvenile Geriatric. I’m a writer, performer and journalist. In a previous life, I created and hosted the ABC-TV interview show One Plus One (2010-19) where I interviewed more than 500 guests from all walks of life. In more than thirty years as a journalist, I’ve been a foreign correspondent based in China, the Middle-East and Europe, a business reporter and a TV presenter.

Right now I’m an independent journalist and history researcher. I interview, write stories and books and occasionally work on theatre shows. I also run workshops to help people tell their own stories.

“Oh Jane! I delight each week in your stories and beautifully written words that touch my heart.” - a subscriber

In 2023 after an existential crisis hiccup, I woke to a mortality alarm that got me thinking about the process of getting older, AKA ageing (or maybe you spell it ‘aging’). You can read about that here.

I am fascinated by how we transform over our lifetimes, what we can prevent with lifestyle and mindset adjustments and the challenges and upsides of dealing with ageing as individuals and society. I plan to age with curiosity and good health, but is there more I can do? Will my genes get in the way? I couldn’t seem to find the right manual, so I’m charting a course and writing my own. I’m a living project.

I am a family history storyteller.

In 2022 I wrote a theatre show about my mother’s upbringing called Lost in Shanghai produced with Contemporary Asian Australian Performance (CAAP). For more posts on creating family stories, here’s a good place to start.

Then, there’s life’s big questions. In 2022 I wrote Rebel Talk, the art of powerful conversations. The book informed a show which premiered in September 2024. The question at the heart of the show is how can we prepare for and learn to engage in difficult conversations to heal the world and ourselves? I’ve gone back to the drawing board on this project, so watch this space!

These days, my writing appears in The Guardian, ABC online, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age but here on Substack is where I get to explore. I love thoughtful audience comments.
